BEHIND THE GEAR

Make Hawai'i Indigenous Again

Mahalo piha for your kako'o in my little wahine owned small business.

I started writing my ideas for 1893 Market in 2020 during covid when we were on lock down. I felt disconnected from Our Culture of Hawai'i because I wasn't able to connect to it in the same way due to the strict restrictions we had to not be on the shoreline in Honolulu. The ocean is my way I feel the most connected to Our Native Hawaiian Culture so when the ocean was taken away from me for the little bit it was that inspired me to write again during my empty time. Conveying my intentions and feelings through my designs gives clear meaning so that there is no confusion as to how I want to make people feel while creating/sharing my gear.

I don't want my gear to be negative, for I am only trying to share my Aloha and kuleana of keeping the Culture alive in my own way. Please don't spin my words & intentions any other way.

When I say, Make Hawai'i Indigenous Again I mean it in the sense of making Hawai'i, the 'aina herself Indigenous again. In the way of our kupuna kept Hawai'i Indigenous for us by planting ulu trees for generations to be fed, filling the valley's winds with 'Olelo Hawai'i, restoring the lo'i to keep poi on the table, cleaning the ocean to keep our Native ecosystems thriving & respecting the aina for all that she gives us.

Rep'em Hard is something I truly want everyone who supports my gear to feel.

Rep'em Hard & proud of what my gear offers you. Feel that connection to your kupuna and

your own stories of the messages I share & how you can relate to them and Rep those stories you hold.

Rep that honor of being Native Hawaiian & Indigenous Polynesian.

Rep'em Hard.

Starting in 2023 most of my gear will be made mostly of embroidery designs. For designs that have mostly ink used, I will be limiting them to two (2) in each size available. This is to lower my impact on the environment that it takes to create ink & the microplastics that come of the gear during normal wear and tear. I choose to do this for my business because the impact I see on clothes piling up at landfills due to the design peeling from the ink used on them.

Embroidery designed gear last longer & don't come off of the gear as fast as ink

(as long as you take care of it properly your good for a lifetime).

Get out there and Make Hawai'i Indigenous Again in your own way Kanaka.
